Ian's Birth Story

Monday morning, December 5th I went in for my 40-week midwife appointment (actually at 39 weeks, 5 days).  Over the weekend I had experienced some signs that labor was coming and my body was already preparing so I asked her to strip my membranes which she agreed to do – I was determined to have a baby this week!  Afterward she said she fully expected me to go that night or the next day.  After my appointment, things never stopped.  I felt crampy all day and fairly consistent early labor contractions started sometime in the afternoon.  I tried to stay busy with final preparations and making English Toffee, anything to stay on my feet and keep moving around so I didn’t end up on the couch counting contractions all afternoon.  By about 6:30pm I decided that they definitely weren’t going away so I called Johanna, my dear friend and doula who was going to drive up from Cincinnati to be with me for the birth.  I told her I really didn’t think I was going to make it through the night without needing to go in, and she agreed to head our way (it’s a good thing, too!).
I continued to have early labor contractions all evening but I hadn’t phoned the midwife yet to let her know what was going on.  I didn’t want her to tell me to come in right away in order to get my antibiotics going (I was group B strep positive) before my mom made it home from California that night!!  But by 9:30pm I couldn’t ignore them anymore.  They really started to pick up in strength so I called my mom to check in with her and she agreed to come over to stay the night with the girls (she had just gotten home from the airport – hadn’t even unpacked!).  I called the midwife and sure enough she told me to come right in to get the antibiotics going so I didn’t have to fuss with it during real active labor (too late!).  Then I called our pastor’s wife to ask if she would come and sit with the girls till about midnight when my mom would be arriving.  And finally I called Johanna to have her meet us at the hospital in Southfield instead of coming to our house.  By about 10:20pm we were on the road!
We got to our room at 11:15pm and learned I was 4-5cm.  It turned out this would be the only time the nurse or midwife would check my progress.  She got the IV going, but the antibiotics that had been ordered had not yet arrived up from the pharmacy yet (you have to order them from the pharmacy when they’re the “nuclear bomb” antibiotics I had to take because I’m allergic to all the other ones they would normally use!).  After lying in bed for a little while I decided I needed some hydrotherapy, so we tried to get things going in the tub but for whatever reason that just wasn’t coming together for me.  Johanna arrived at a few minutes after midnight and she helped me get to the shower where I labored on my hands and knees, draped over a towel-covered birthing ball for a good 30-40 minutes.  At 1am they finally hooked me up to the antibiotic.  I then spent about 40 minutes laboring sitting on the birthing ball in the shower with Johanna or Alan spraying warm water down my back all the while.  When Alan was doing the water Johanna was massaging with lavender scented lotion.  I was pampered as I breathed and focused through each growing contraction (praying my water would pop to really get things moving!  I didn’t feel like things were getting strong enough, fast enough, even though I was working pretty hard).
At about 1:40am I finally said, “I’m worried I’m too comfortable!”  I thought the water in the shower might be relaxing me too much and it was preventing things from moving.  So we got up and walked for just a couple of minutes, then Johanna suggested I get into a certain, rather uncomfortable position on the bed to see if we could get my water to break.  (The fact that I had labored this long with waters intact was so foreign to me after my previous two labors began with water breaking and no contractions for hours!)  At 1:50am Johanna arranged me on the bed and with my next contraction my water broke and I felt a tremendous amount of pressure.  This caught me off guard as I didn’t gradually make it to this spot and I had to work very hard to refocus my attention breathing the baby down through the contractions and allowing the pressure to work for me.  Talking to Johanna later we wondered if I kind of skipped over the transition phase of labor (the most intense part before the pushing phase) and just went straight to the baby making his way down the birth canal.
I got on my hands and knees in the bed and draped the top half of my body over the birthing ball.  Not sure how long I was in this position but it was until I could no longer feel my legs under me because they had fallen asleep.  Everyone helped rotate me to my side (the same position I birthed Evelyn in – and we were in the same room actually, and at practically the same time of night!) and I breathed through contractions, burying my face in Alan’s shoulder (my nose is bruised!).  At some point during this time Alan reminded them to remove my IV completely so I could relax better.  I honestly have no recollection of this, so I guess I was really in the zone.  (Later my midwife asked me if I had taken hypnobirthing courses because that’s basically what I was practicing with my breathing exercises throughout labor.  Nope!  I said, “Actually, you’ll never believe what taught me deep relaxation like this at first: High School Marching Band!!”)
I continued to feel a lot of pressure but didn’t want to get my hopes up that things were coming to an end, so I just continued to breathe through contractions, trying to give into the pressure and kept asking, “Is he coming?”  Everyone would say, “He’s coming!” which I didn’t know exactly what that meant but it renewed my strength and encouraged me!  The whole team – Johanna, Alan, Mary (midwife), Ruth (midwife student) and another Mary (nurse) were so fantastic and encouraging the whole time.  They did whatever I needed, they were patient when I was in a contraction and ignoring their questions till I could answer them, they interfered minimally with my process, and said all of the right encouraging things that kept me focused and empowered.  Such a great team!
At this point my body gave me a nice long break.  I don’t know how long it was but it was several times longer than the period between contractions that I had been experiencing for the last hour at least.  No contractions – just peaceful rest.  My body knew what was going to happen next!  I looked at Alan and said, “Our baby’s coming.  We’re going to meet him.  I love you.”  With the next contraction I felt the head coming down and I thought, “I’m just going to let it come.  This will be over faster if I simply succumb to the pressure and let him come.”  So I did.  And sure enough the head came down, crowned and emerged all through a single contraction.  (Mary the midwife later told me, “You hit the eject button!”)  The next contraction pushed the rest of him out and he was in my arms at 2:33am.  There is nothing like that feeling of emptiness (literally!) and relief when that baby is out and the joy and elation when you hold him and can’t believe he’s actually there, laying on top of you after all the hard work you’ve done!  And even more amazing to me this time?  I never pushed.  Not once.  All I did was breathe through contractions, succumb to what my body wanted to do and he came right out.  So unbelievably satisfying.
His apgars were 9 and 9.  He nursed like a champ at 1 hr and 4 minutes old.  He was finally weighed and measured at about 2 hours old – 8 lbs 4 oz., 20”.  So now we’re getting to know each other.  I’m totally in love :).
And the worst, aka most uncomfortable part of the entire labor?  The darn IV in my arm!  My wrist was the only thing that was sore the next day!

Kayaking on the Pond

We stayed the weekend at Amma's after Adeline's birthday because Grandmother & Pa were visiting from California and we wanted to spend some time together.  While Grandmother was in town she bought Amma a new (second) kayak for the pond so more people could go out at once, so Grandmother and Amma each took a girl out on the pond and kayaked around.  One of our favorite summertime activities at Amma's!

Happy Birthday, Adeline!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Adeline on her 4th birthday!  She felt like the belle of the ball with all the gifts, well wishes, and adventures of the day!

We left our house in the morning to head over to Amma's.  In the afternoon we had an impromptu gift-opening session which turned out to be perfect!

Later we had tacos for dinner and then went over to Tip Toes, a baby/children's store in downtown Holland, to do Captured in Clay handprint tiles for both girls. (Amma's got pictures of this on her camera so hopefully we'll get them up soon.)  This is something I've been wanting to do for years, really, and was thrilled to finally take the girls.  We'll get to pick up the finished product in a few weeks!

After Tip Toes we went back home to Amma's to have some cake.  Adeline's big request was a PINK cake with fresh strawberries on the side.  Daddy got his own chocolate brownie cake, too, since his birthday is just around the corner.

It was so fun to make a big deal of our little girl -- correction, BIG girl! -- and see her feel so loved, special, and celebrated.  Thanks to all who sent gifts and messages to her.  She loved it all!

Grandma's Visit

Alan's mom came out for a visit this week and the girls were just overjoyed (I think Grandma was, too :).  Tuesday we just spent around the house -- Alan went to work but came home to take me to lunch while Grandma stayed home with snoozing kiddoes :).

On Wednesday we rented a minivan and all went over to Holland.  Grandma hadn't been over to the other side of the state yet so we took her over for a visit at Amma's.  We spent a lot of time just hanging out and not doing much besides driving around and showing Grandma some sights because the weather wasn't the best.  But we did get a chance to have a fire and s'mores one night on the pond.

Grandma was scheduled to leave on Saturday but not till later in the day so we made it over to the beach that morning.  Adeline had been looking forward to going to the beach with Grandma and Amma for weeks but we were thwarted by the weather in Holland.  Thankfully Saturday was beautiful and the perfect day to spend at the lake.

Thanks, Grandma, for such a fun visit!  See you at Christmastime! =)

Kite Festival!

We returned to the Lyon Township Kite Festival this year (we went last year).  Both girls colored their free kite this time and had fun running around with it to make it go in the air.  They also got penguins painted on their arms.  It was hot, like last year, but at least it was windier than last year so we got to see lots of kites in the air.  I'm still not feeling great so we couldn't stay or walk around long, but it was still a fun adventure for the whole family.

"Figgy" Conrow

Now that I'm feeling a little better I'm going to try to update the blog more faithfully.  I'm hoping to feel exceptionally better in the next few weeks, but marginally better will have to do for now.

Two weeks ago our baby was the size of a fig, so we dubbed him/her "Figgy".  Adeline was "Kumquat", Evelyn was "Floyd" and then "Pink Floyd" once we found out she was a girl, so I definitely needed something creative for #3.  This will also help us keep the name a secret if and when we have one before he/she arrives.

I had a midwife appointment this morning.  I'm at 13 weeks and I've only lost about 4 pounds thus far -- different from the other two pregnancies where I lost 15 pounds in the first 6 weeks.  My blood pressure continues to be low, but that's no surprise.  I heard Figgy's heartbeat for the first time today.  I was able to see it on the ultrasound monitor at 9 weeks, but today I heard it.  That sound never gets any less amazing to me.  She put the wand on my belly and we listened.  At first I couldn't hear it and it sounded really slow.  I said that to Sarah, the midwife, and she said that was my heartbeat.  Then Figgy's heart came through loud and clear, but I could still hear the undertones of my own.  There was something truly awesome about the mingling of my heartbeat with my tiny baby's.  What a miracle life is!  I love you so much Figgy and I haven't even met you yet.

I go back in 4 weeks for another regular appointment and two weeks later, on July 13th, we have our ultrasound and will find out the gender.  Feel free to venture a guess in the gender poll on the right sidebar!

Thanks for being faithful readers even though I'm not a faithful writer!  Hopefully more soon =).

Let's find out who faithfully checks our blog even when I'm not so faithful with posts...

So those of you who continue to faithfully check my blog for new updates despite the fact that for the last year they have been few and far between get a special announcement before the news goes further.  Now you're saying, "Okay!  I'm ready!  What's the news???"  Well............

We're Pregnant!  =)

Yep, Baby Conrow #3 will be making his or her debut sometime around the first week of December.  In the meantime I'm trying my darnedest to stay healthy and put off (the inevitable) throwing up for as long as possible.  You're prayers in this area are greatly appreciated.

Well that's all.  Thanks for being faithful readers of my not-so-faithful blog.

Much love,
Meredith for the growing Conrow clan :)

I think it's time for a post...

Happy New Year!

My goodness. Here we are in 2011. I know it's cliche, but the time really does fly, and seems to move by ever more quickly when there are little ones in the picture. Evelyn is 20 months old today. When Adeline was this age we were only two short months away from welcoming Evelyn into the world! Each day is filled with more joy, more challenges, and more lessons to be learned. And each day requires just as much if not more faith and trust in the Lord as the days prior. God seems to be teaching us more and more with each passing day to lean on Him completely. He has certainly provided for all our needs and even some beyond that.

My prayer is that He will give me the desires of my heart. If the desires come from Him the satisfaction and joy is multiplied exponentially when he fulfills those desires. It is a difficult prayer to pray. Sometimes - to be truthful, too often - I fall into the trap of American materialism and kick it into high gear with "get it done" mode and try to fulfill all my needs and wants on my own. When I do this I am thankful in the end that God has placed limitations on my life, even thorns in my flesh, that prevent me from doing too much on my own. Otherwise I know I'd be in a whole lot of trouble!

I am reminded of the story of Rebekah, when she tricks Isaac into bestowing the birthright on Jacob instead of Esau. God had revealed to Rebekah years before that Jacob, the younger son, was going to receive the blessing, but instead of trusting in God to work His will in His own time, she saw Isaac dying and decided to take matters into her own hands. But Isaac ended up living another 35 years! I am convinced by this story that this is why God does not tell me more than I need to know for the moment. It is a daily process to die to myself, my selfish desires, what I think is right for the moment, trying to force something that I believe God wants for me but just not yet... By the grace of God I am learning to lean on and trust in Him more each day.

So I suspect 2011 will include much of the same "hurry up and wait" feeling I often get these days. But I can't tell you how excited I am to see what God has in store for us, for 2011 and to the end of our days here on earth, because His blessings are, simply put, the best. Nothing compares to the glorious feeling of being right within the will of God, right where He wants you, primed for His goodness and blessing in our lives. That is my prayer for my family, and it will be my prayer for yours.

Love and blessings,
Meredith

Christmas Part Deux

Today we got to see Megan for the first time since April!  The DeYoungs spent the summer in Zambia working on an adoption (which sadly did not go through).  Peter and the girls returned in time for the school year to start, but Megan stayed in Zambia for another month.  She came home to San Antonio in October and the whole fam made it up to Holland for Christmas (on New Year's Eve :).

Adeline took this picture :)

We had a fun time opening gifts together and spending quality time with everyone.  The time went by way too quickly, but not so quickly that we didn't manage to get our family photo with everyone in it out on the deck.  The crazy part?  Someone said, "Wow!  Look at that sunset!" and within minutes we were all outside, the timer was set and the picture was taken!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas Phase 1

This was an interesting year for Christmas!  The week before Christmas Adeline became very ill and stayed that way for quite some time.  We're not sure if she got the croup (it had been going around) or just a bad respiratory flu, but she was scary sick :(.  In the meantime Evelyn wouldn't leave her sick sister's side (hence the picture below) and she got sick too :(.

Nevertheless I took the girls over to Amma's house the week of Christmas as Alan was flying to California to spend some time with his grandpa who was dying.  After a couple more sick days at Amma's we were finally able to go outside and enjoy some winter fun on the frozen pond.

On Christmas Eve I drove to the airport to pick Alan up.  On the way I received word from his mom that Alan's grandpa has passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus.  Although sad we were very grateful that Alan was able to spend his grandpa's final days with him.

We awoke Christmas morning with all the family together again.  The girls had helped to put presents sent from Grandmother & Pa under the tree.  We had our requisite pictures in front of the tree with the girls in their Christmas jammies.  Overall we had a fun time, and are looking forward to Christmas Part Deux with the rest of the whole family together next week!
